The Jumblies
By Edward Lear (Public Domain)
I
They went to sea in a Sieve, they did,
In a Sieve they went to sea:
In spite of all their friends could say,
On a winter’s morn, on a stormy day,
In a Sieve they went to sea!
And when the Sieve turned round and round,
And every one cried, ‘You’ll all be drowned!’
They called aloud, ‘Our Sieve ain’t big,
But we don’t care a button! we don’t care a fig!
In a Sieve we’ll go to sea!’
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.
II
They sailed away in a Sieve, they did,
In a Sieve they sailed so fast,
With only a beautiful pea-green veil
Tied with a riband by way of a sail,
To a small tobacco-pipe mast;
And every one said, who saw them go,
‘O won’t they be soon upset, you know!
For the sky is dark, and the voyage is long,
And happen what may, it’s extremely wrong
In a Sieve to sail so fast!’
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.
III
The water it soon came in, it did,
The water it soon came in;
So to keep them dry, they wrapped their feet
In a pinky paper all folded neat,
And they fastened it down with a pin.
And they passed the night in a crockery-jar,
And each of them said, ‘How wise we are!
Though the sky be dark, and the voyage be long,
Yet we never can think we were rash or wrong,
While round in our Sieve we spin!’
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.
IV
And all night long they sailed away;
And when the sun went down,
They whistled and warbled a moony song
To the echoing sound of a coppery gong,
In the shade of the mountains brown.
‘O Timballo! How happy we are,
When we live in a sieve and a crockery-jar,
And all night long in the moonlight pale,
We sail away with a pea-green sail,
In the shade of the mountains brown!’
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.
V
They sailed to the Western Sea, they did,
To a land all covered with trees,
And they bought an Owl, and a useful Cart,
And a pound of Rice, and a Cranberry Tart,
And a hive of silvery Bees.
And they bought a Pig, and some green Jack-daws,
And a lovely Monkey with lollipop paws,
And forty bottles of Ring-Bo-Ree,
And no end of Stilton Cheese.
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.
VI
And in twenty years they all came back,
In twenty years or more,
And every one said, ‘How tall they’ve grown!’
For they’ve been to the Lakes, and the Torrible Zone,
And the hills of the Chankly Bore;
And they drank their health, and gave them a feast
Of dumplings made of beautiful yeast;
And everyone said, ‘If we only live,
We too will go to sea in a Sieve,—
To the hills of the Chankly Bore!’
Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live;
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
And they went to sea in a Sieve.

glowing
(©2002 Ken Clinger)
breathing deeper, relaxation, separation, matter fades.
fears diminish, high above the earth, love conscious, light cascades.
shift the focus, right of passage, flowing inward, clearer phase.
brightness clusters, understanding, leading inflow, rainbows blaze.
outflow helpers, stray connection, lead us homeward, angels guide.
warm approaching, friends of wonder, gentle probing, truth confides.
endless shifting, all direction, movement ceases, override.
stillness welcomes, childhood promise, music destiny provides.
looking into each other’s eyes for clarity,
folding their wings they rested on the shoreline of the sea.
clouds begin their cumulus dance,
trading expanse with sunshine.
closing their eyes they meet in formless symmetry.
cycles of birth and death they’ve shared outside infinity.
senses alter meanings of light,
simmering bright thru lifetimes.
opening eyes they catch the sunshine smiling thru the trees.
behind space, behind time, we are glowing.
behind sense, behind mind, we are knowing, we are flowing.
clarity, charity, inner vision.
realize, harmonize, true condition.
behind sound, behind light, we are growing.
clouds of color lights are playing,
moving past with clarity.
radiation new awareness, finding lost serenity.
rate of movement, gathered vistas, deep commitment’s charity.
enter music’s celebration, rise into infinity.
slipping into each other’s dream for clarity.
singing a song of sharing learned in lifetimes on the sea.
fairy tales and legends come true, layers accrue in meaning.
following stars to distant lands of destiny.
learning to see familiar souls in new identities.
open eyes and opening heart, living the art of dreaming.
unfolding wings they join the breeze’s dance with gravity.
behind space, behind time, we are glowing.
behind sense, behind mind, we are knowing, we are flowing.
clarity, charity, inner vision.
realize, harmonize, true condition.
behind sound, behind light, we are growing.
rest awhile and hear the music, deep within your energy.
clouds dissolving spiral tighter, vortex forming harmony.
surging waves from far inside, their beauty cleanses breaking free.
total joy and total freedom sharing love to truly be.

Persephone
(©2002-03 Ken Clinger)
frolicking in fields and forests
vegetation thrives upon her smile
persephone among the flowers
blooming all around and all the while
proud demeter mother’s joy
persephone brings beauty as she plays
eternal spring a floral dance
the foliage delights thru golden days
laughing with the sun she glows
within smiling, dancing in the rain she goes
finding secrets in the breeze
sharing with the trees
she knows
persephone among the flowers
hades finds delight in what he sees
promises of queen of all his realm
the underworld, soul’s destiny
persephone declines in dismay
dreadful thoughts of future with no flowers
hades grabs persephone
abduction to the realm within his powers
demeter senses absence
mother’s loss of child persephone is gone
searching all the planet
every trace of daughter’s presence has withdrawn
neglect of duties, cultivation’s
goddess, sorrow, famine in the fields
rumors on the wind from underground
her daughter’s whereabouts revealed
demeter has no welcome underground
she pleads with zeus to free her child
zeus’s need of famine’s end
a mother daughter’s need to reconcile
he grants her plea, sends hermes down
to hades’ realm, persephone’s release
but in her stay, persephone
has tasted fruits no living creature eats
food of the dead, a bond is made
no creature has the power to escape
hades loves persephone
he offers a solution to her fate
six months of the year she’ll stay
in hades’ realm to keep him company
six months she return to sunshine
bringing spring and summer harmony
frolicking in fields and gardens
vegetation thrives upon her smile
persephone among the flowers
blooming all around and all the while
proud demeter mother’s joy
persephone brings beauty as she plays
spring and summer floral dance
the foliage delights thru golden days
laughing with the sun she glows
within smiling, dancing in the rain she goes
finding secrets in the breeze
sharing with the trees
she knows
